Background

Counseling support is confidential, non-medical, short term, situational, and focused on problem-solving. Non-medical counseling may address life skills (anger management, conflict resolution, parenting, parent/child communication, relationship issues, marriage enrichment etc…), the military lifestyle (deployment stress, reintegration, relocation, adjustment, separation, coping skills homesickness, loss and grief etc…), and financial counseling.

Key Points

  • Military OneSource
    • Military One Source (MOS) counselors possess a master’s degree or Ph.D and are licensed or certified to practice independently.
    • For those eligible, MOS counseling is free and confidential with the exception of mandatory state, federal, and military reporting requirements (i.e., domestic violence, child abuse, and duty to warn situations).
    • MOS counseling provides up to twelve sessions per issue.
  • MOS Counselors
    • are available for face-to-face sessions (CONUS) within fifteen miles or thirty minutes of the client;
    • have an office located within the community (CONUS);
    • are available for telephonic or web-based sessions (CONUS & OCONUS); and
    • provide sessions using the traditional fifty minute hour service delivery.
  • Military Family Life Counselors
    • Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLC) possess a master’s degree or Ph.D and are licensed or certified to practice independently.
    • For those eligible, MFLC counseling is free and confidential with the exception of mandatory state, federal, and military reporting requirements (i.e., domestic violence, child abuse, and duty to warn situations).
    • MFLC counseling provides up to twelve sessions per issue.
  • MFLCs
    • provide flexible service delivery to meet emerging needs;
    • work on rotational assignments up to ninety days on military installations in Family Centers, in Child Development Centers, in schools, in summer programs, or embedded in units;
    • support on-demand assignments for the National Guard and Reserve component for pre-deployment, deployment, and reintegration events for service members and their families; and
    • have full-time assignments to support the Joint Family Support Assistance Program.

Eligibility
All active duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members and their families, regardless of activation status, are eligible for MOS counseling.

All active duty members, activated National Guard and Reserve members, and their families are eligible for MFLC services.
